Frequently Asked Questions

Common inquiries about our handcrafted bookbinding and paper preservation services.

What types of books do you restore?

We work on historical records, family scrapbooks, vintage municipal library archives, antique ledgers, and family Bibles. Each item is assessed for paper fiber density and structural condition before any work begins.

Do you use reversible adhesives for paper mending?

Yes. We primarily use organic long-fiber wheat starch paste for tear mending and bookbinding. For hinging and encapsulation, we may use methylcellulose. Both are pH-neutral and fully reversible with water, ensuring future conservators can undo our work without damage.

How do you assess the condition of a book without damaging it?

We use non-destructive techniques such as visual inspection under magnification, fiber analysis with a handheld microscope, and gentle flex tests. We never cut, tear, or chemically alter the original materials during assessment.

Can you replace a leather spine while keeping the original covers?

Absolutely. We specialize in leather spine replacement (rebacking) where the original boards and endpapers are retained. We pare vegetable-tanned goat leather to match the original thickness and color, then attach it with reversible adhesive. Original hardware like clasps and corner pieces are cleaned and reattached.

How long does a typical restoration take?

Timelines vary depending on the complexity and condition of the item. A simple tear repair may take a few days, while a full rebacking and signature re-sewing can take several weeks. We provide a detailed estimate and timeline after the initial assessment.

Do you offer consultations for personal collections?

Yes. We welcome inquiries about individual family heirlooms, small archive collections, or institutional holdings. Contact us via email at info@pagespaperco.com or call 022-358-7120 to discuss your project. Our workshop is located at 6679 Anderson Wall Apt. 087.
